Template: Participation for Census

Each semester, faculty are required to verify student attendance by certifying the census for each course. It is important that students understand what is expected of them in order to be counted as "present" in the first days or weeks, depending on the length of the course. 

These "attendance" expectations may vary greatly depending on the length and modality of each course. 

Ensure that the expectations for your course are clearly communicated to students in your welcome communication, syllabus, announcements, and/or by other methods.

Below are some examples of how you can word these expectations.

  • Each semester faculty are required to verify student attendance via a census. The census date for this course is [date]. Before this date, students in this course need to show that they are actively engaged in the course in the following ways: {select those that apply for your course or create your own}
    • Attend all live class sessions [or a specific number or percentage]
    • Submit [specific title] assignment/quiz/exam
    • Participate in [title] class discussion
    • Complete all assignments included in the [title] module
    • Schedule and attend a one-on-one meeting with the instructor
