Online Course Format

Fully Online Format

This is a fully online class; all activities occur in the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), including all instruction, assignments, interactions and communications. There are no required meetings at scheduled times. Optional meeting times are scheduled every week (office hours, see homepage for details) for questions or assistance. 

Asynchronous

The course material is organized into units, with specific units opening up each week, and due dates for closing assignments each week. We do not meet at any time as a group to do the coursework; you will conduct the coursework independently, whenever you chose to, during the times it is available. For this X-unit, X-week class, the expected online activity time is XXX hours per week, including online presentations, videos, assignments, discussions, peer reviews, and other work. In addition, you should plan on X or more hours of additional time for homework activities. You must stay active in the course; plan to log in, check announcements, and participate in discussions at least twice a week. 

Not Self-Paced 

Although this is a fully online and asynchronous class, it is not an independent study, or self-paced class. We will be working through the course material together, at the same pace, with weekly modules that must be completed within the weekly time-frame, and opportunities to work together with your peers, asynchronously, to discuss the concepts and ideas we learn each week.

  1. Attendance: you must stay active in the course. Plan to log in, check announcements, and participate in discussions at least twice a week. If you fail to meet mandatory deadlines, and/or are inactive for more than one full week, your overall performance will be assessed and you may be dropped.

Academic Dishonesty

Instructors, accordingly, have the responsibility and authority for dealing with instances of cheating or plagiarism that may occur in their classes. Such activities could include stealing tests, using “cheat sheets,” using unauthorized technology, copying off another’s test, or turning in someone else’s work as his/her own. Instructors have the responsibility to report instances of plagiarism or cheating to the Dean of Student Life. Academic dishonesty, in any form, is a violation of the Moorpark College Student Code of Conduct Links to an external site. as outlined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities section and, as such, is subject to investigation, charges of misconduct, and disciplinary consequences.

It is the belief at Moorpark College that students share a responsibility with their instructors for assuring that their education is honestly attained. In keeping with this belief, every instructor has the responsibility and authority to deal with any instances of plagiarism, cheating and/or fabrication that occur in the classroom. Examples of academic dishonesty include (but are not limited to) the following:

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else's work as one's own. Examples include:

  • Copying and pasting text from websites or other electronic sources and presenting it in an assignment as your own original work
  • Copying and pasting text from printed sources (including books, magazines, encyclopedias or newspapers) and presenting it in an assignment as your own work
  • Using another student's work and claiming it as your own original work (even if you have the permission of the other student).

Cheating

Cheating is the act of pretending (or helping others to pretend) to have mastered course material through misrepresentation. Examples include:

  • Copying in whole or in part from another student's test or paper
  • Allowing another student to copy from your test or assignment
  • Using the textbook, course handouts, or notes during a test without instructor permission
  • Stealing, buying or otherwise obtaining all or part of a test before it is administered
  • Selling or giving away all or part of a test before it is administered; having someone else attend a course or take a test in your place
  • Attending a course or taking a test for someone else
  • Failing to follow test-taking procedures, including talking during the test, ignoring starting and stopping times, or other disruptive activity
  • Using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate content and presenting it as your own.

Fabrication

Fabrication is the intentional use of invent information. Examples include:

  • Signing a roll sheet for another student
  • Giving false information to college personnel
  • Answering verbal or written questions in an untruthful manner
  • Inventing data or sources of information for research papers or other assignments; this includes the use of false information provided by artificial intelligence (AI) generators.

As members of the Moorpark College learning community, students are not to engage in any form of academic dishonesty. Any act of academic dishonesty will be considered a very serious offense that is subject to disciplinary action.

Academic Policies : Attendance

Academic Policies Links to an external site.. All students, both registered and on the waitlist, are expected to attend the first class meeting. Instructors are required to drop all registered and waitlisted students who do not attend the first day of class and those who quit attending prior to the census date for each class. They may, but are not required to, drop registered students who quit attending after census but before the final drop deadline for each class. Students are responsible for dropping their classes and withdrawing from the college, and should initiate the drop themselves.

All students admitted to the colleges of the Ventura County Community College District are expected to attend classes regularly, both because continuity of attendance is necessary to both individual and group progress in any class, and because financial support of the college is dependent upon student attendance. Absence for any reason does not relieve the student from the responsibility of completing all class requirements.

It is also the responsibility of students, at the beginning of the semester, to become aware of the attendance and absence policies of the instructor for each class in which they are enrolled. When a student’s absence exceeds in number 1/9 of the total class contact hours for the session (e.g., absence from a semester-long class equal to twice the number of hours the class meets in one week), the instructor may drop such student from the class and record a grade in accordance with the policy for dropping a course.
